Near-future discovery of point sources of ultra-high-energy neutrinos

چکیده

Upcoming neutrino telescopes may discover ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic neutrinos, with energies beyond 100 PeV, in the next 10-20 years. Finding their sources would identify guaranteed sites of interaction UHE rays, whose origin is unknown. We search for by looking multiplets neutrinos arriving from similar directions. Our forecasts are state-of-the-art, geared at radio-detection IceCube-Gen2. They account detector energy and angular response, critical, but uncertain backgrounds. Sources declination $-45^\circ$ to $0^\circ$ will be easiest discover. Discovering even one steady-state source 10 years imply that has an luminosity least larger than about $10^{43}$ erg/s (depending on redshift evolution). no transient disfavor brighter $10^{53}$ erg as dominant. results aim inform design upcoming detectors.

Search for Point Sources of High Energy Neutrinos with AMANDA

This paper describes the search for astronomical sources of high-energy neutrinos using the AMANDA-B10 detector, an array of 302 photomultiplier tubes, used for the detection of Cherenkov light from upward traveling neutrino-induced muons, buried deep in ice at the South Pole. The absolute pointing accuracy and angular resolution were studied by using coincident events between the AMANDA detect...

Multimessenger search for point sources: ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos

The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and neutrinos is still a mystery. Hadronic acceleration theory suggests that they should originate in the same sources (astrophysical or cosmological), together with gammarays. While gamma-rays have been linked to astrophysical sources, no point source of UHECRs or neutrinos have been found so far. In this paper, the multimessenger combinatio...

Invisible decays of ultra-high energy neutrinos

*Correspondence: Omar G. Miranda, Departamento de Física, Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN, Av. IPN 2508, Apdo. Postal 14-740, México, DF, Mexico e-mail: [email protected] Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are expected to provide a source of ultra high energy cosmic rays, accompanied with potentially detectable neutrinos at neutrino telescopes. Recently, IceCube has set an upper...

Astrophysical Sources of High Energy Neutrinos

I give a brief critical review of the predicted intensity of diffuse high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin over the energy range from ∼ 10 eV to ∼ 10 eV. Neutrinos from interactions of galactic cosmic rays with interstellar matter are guaranteed, and the intensity can be reliably predicted to within a factor of 2 up to 10 eV. Somewhat less certain are intensities in the same energy rang...

Galactic sources of high energy neutrinos

The undisputed galactic origin of cosmic rays at energies below the so-called knee around 10eV implies an existence of a nonthemal population of galactic objects which effectively accelerate protons and nuclei to TeV-PeV energies. The distinct signatures of these cosmic accelerators are high energy neutrinos and γ-rays produced through hadronic interactions. While γ-rays can be produced also by...
